Bosnia is the last fly fishing paradise in Europe. Undammed rivers running crystal clear, wild brown trout and grayling at sizes you rarely see any more, and one of the last natural huchen populations on the continent. No stocking, no fishing pressure, no engineering – fishing of a kind that has all but vanished from Central Europe. Bosnia is not called the "New Zealand of Europe" for nothing.

From Vienna the best water is a single day's drive away – or fly to Zagreb and continue by car. From Graz it is only four to five hours. We know the best rivers, the best guides and the best places to stay, and we build an individual package around you: three days for grayling on the Ribnik, a week hunting huchen on the Una, or a mix of several rivers. Sebastian, Thomas and Clemens have all fished Bosnia themselves. We advise you from first-hand experience.

The rivers – Bosnia's crown jewels

Two regions, one paradise. In the north around Ključ lie the Una, Unac, Sana, Ribnik, Krusnica, Pliva and Janj – the heart of Bosnian fly fishing. In the south near Konjic the Neretva runs through spectacular gorges with its tributaries. The final choice of water is made individually, based on your target species, your experience and the conditions on the day.

Una
The "only one" – jewel of the Balkans

The Una, whose name means "the only one", is among the most beautiful rivers in Europe and holds one of the finest natural huchen populations on the continent. This powerful river rises in the national park on the border between Bosnia and Croatia and runs 20 to 60 meters wide. Between Martin Brod and Kulen Vakuf it offers 25 km of perfect, wadeable fly water with trout between 70 and 85 cm.

Target Species
Brown trout, grayling, huchen
Width
20–60 m
Character
Big river, wadeable & boat

Season: Trout Mar–Oct | Grayling May–Oct | Huchen Jun–Dec

Unac
Tributary of the Una – trophy trout to 90 cm

The Unac joins the Una near Martin Brod and is famous for its outsized brown and rainbow trout – fish between 70 and 90 cm are no rarity. The river runs around 30 meters wide and between 0.5 and 4 meters deep. Trout come to dry flies, nymphs and streamers, with late afternoon and early morning offering the best chance at a big fish. The deeper sections also hold large grayling.

Target Species
Brown trout, rainbow trout, grayling
Width
~30 m
Character
Trophy water, best morning and evening

Season: Trout Mar–Oct | Grayling May–Oct

Ribnik
Legendary chalk stream – trophy grayling

The Ribnik is known well beyond the Balkans as one of the finest chalk streams in Europe. Gin-clear water, rich weed growth and an excellent head of brown trout and grayling – fish over 50 cm come to the net regularly. Late May and early June bring the sessions people remember for years, when big fish rise steadily to hatching insects. The Ribnik is demanding: long leaders and micro nymphs are the key.

Target Species
Brown trout, grayling, huchen (lower river)
Width
~30 m
Character
Chalk stream, demanding

Season: Fishable year-round

Sana
The versatile all-rounder – trout to huchen

The Sana offers first-class, varied fishing of a rare order. The upper river at its confluence with the Ribnik is a dream for any fly fisher – breathtaking runs full of wild grayling and trout. The lower river near Ključ is a classic mixed fishery with trout, grayling and a healthy huchen population. The tributaries Sanica and Klokot add further excellent fly water to the region, with the Sanica particularly known for its outstanding grayling.

Target Species
Brown trout, grayling, huchen, chub
Width
15–50 m
Character
Upper and lower river, versatile

Krusnica
Spring creek with sight fishing

The Krusnica is a spring creek near Bosanska Krupa and ideally suited to the fly. The first hundred meters run fast, the rest slower with deep pockets. A rich insect life supports an outstanding head of fish, and most of the river lends itself well to sight fishing. In the deeper stretches very large trout and juvenile huchen are taken regularly on streamers and nymphs.

Target Species
Brown trout, grayling, huchen
Character
Spring creek, sight fishing
Level
Deep sections for advanced anglers

Season: Trout Mar–Oct | Grayling May–Dec

Pliva
A demanding chalk stream paradise

The Pliva counts among the most demanding and most beautiful water in Bosnia. Gin-clear water, deep slow-moving runs and outsized trout and grayling. Long leaders of up to 5 meters and micro nymphs are the key to success. Late May and early June bring exceptional dry fly sessions. The upper river wades well; the lower river, with its deep pockets and slow current, is particularly demanding.

Target Species
Brown trout, grayling
Width
20–40 m
Character
Chalk stream, technically demanding

Season: Fishable year-round

Janj
Emerald-green paradise in a nature reserve

The emerald-green Janj recalls the Una but runs markedly colder, holding a rich head of trout and grayling. The Janj island is famous, where the river splits into countless small channels with old mills standing between them. The fishable stretch runs 5 km with depths between 20 and 150 centimeters – a genuine paradise for dry fly and wet fly work.

Width
5–20 m
Character

Neretva
230 km of wild river – native trout

The Neretva runs 230 km through Bosnia and Herzegovina to the Adriatic. Untouched country, river gorges, extraordinary views and native trout make it something apart. One highlight: the Neretva holds two rare endemic species, the softmouth trout and the marble trout, found in only a handful of European rivers. Fly fishing is possible along its whole length, as well as on the tributaries Neretvica and Rakitnica. The region around Konjic, south of Sarajevo, is a popular base.

Target Species
Brown trout, softmouth trout, marble trout, grayling
Region
Konjic (south of Sarajevo)
Character
Wild river, gorges, endemic species

The country & the season

Bosnia and Herzegovina lies in the heart of the Balkans and is often called the "blue heart of Europe" – for its undammed, free-flowing rivers, the kind that disappeared from Central Europe long ago. The landscape is one of mountains, gorges and forest. The people are hospitable, the food excellent and the prices moderate.

The main trout season runs from March to October. Grayling are fishable from May to December depending on the river. The huchen season on the Una opens in June and runs to December. The best months for dry fly work are May and June, when stoneflies and mayflies hatch in numbers. September is prime time: stable conditions, little pressure and fish feeding hard before winter. Most waters are catch and release and fly only.

The main season runs from March to December. May and June bring the best hatches for dry fly work. September is prime time – stable conditions, active fish and little pressure. The huchen season on the Una runs from June to December.
How do I get to Bosnia?
From Vienna the region around Ključ is around 600 km by car. From Graz it is only four to five hours. Alternatively fly to Zagreb, which is well served by low-cost carriers, and continue by rental car. For the Neretva in the south, a flight to Split or Sarajevo can make more sense. We advise you on the best route.

Do I need a lot of experience?
Bosnia has water for every level. Newcomers do well on the Sana and Janj, while the Ribnik and Pliva are demanding chalk streams for experienced fly fishers. Huchen fishing calls for experience with heavy tackle. Our guides match the choice of water to your level.
Is Bosnia safe?
Yes. The regions we fish are considered very safe. Local people are hospitable and the infrastructure is good. There are no hazards in the areas we fish. Bosnia has established itself as one of the most popular fly fishing destinations in Europe.
What gear do I need for Bosnia?
For the Ribnik and Pliva chalk streams a delicate single-hand 9–10 ft in #4–#5, with long leaders up to 5 meters and micro nymphs from size 18 – that is the key. For bigger rivers like the Una and Sana a stronger #5–#6. For huchen single-hand #8–#9 or two-handed #7–#8 with heavy streamers and a sink tip. Breathable waders and polarized sunglasses for the sight fishing.
What is "Bosnian nymphing"?
A nymphing technique developed in Bosnia, closely related to Euro nymphing and Czech nymphing. It uses weighted nymphs without an indicator and is particularly effective on Bosnian rivers. Our local guides are masters of it and are happy to show you on the water.
